Let's Just Call It $1.6 Million Over Two

The officials numbers are in from Arrowhead Border War I and it breaks down as a $1.264 million payout for KU.

"(Jim) Marchiony said the Jayhawks’ take was about $300,000 more than an average home game."

So, we'll round up and call it $1.6 million in new revenue for Kansas over a two-year period. They are right -- from a financial perspective there's really no debate. I'm familiar with some businesses that operate around the same budget that the KUAC does, and believe me $800,000 annualized revenue is taken pretty seriously.

It'll be interesting to see how the rest of the issues factor in -- game atmosphere, competitive advantages, recruiting, national attention. I think one thing all Jayhawk football fans can agree on is that it would be nice to see another winning season with Memorial Stadium full each Saturday next fall. Follow that with talks of expanding Memorial to 60k or 65k and then I think Lawrence residents will be able to piece together the benefits for their city.

The Arrowhead Disaster is One Step Closer to the Grave

"The Border War against Missouri will again be played in Arrowhead Stadium. That game is not part of the 2008 season ticket package."

This will now be a true road game for KU.

Arrowhead Redux

You probably caught this little tidbit in Jeffrey Flanagan's KC Star column this morning -- there's a little talk about moving next year's Border War to Friday night. Arrowhead is pretty much a dirty word in the KU lexicon at this point, but I wonder what is the advantage of this move. Giving me two days to recover instead of one?

Given the fact that this was one of the highest rated regular season college football games for 2007, why tamper with success?

The Ultimate in Selfishness

Yesterday, the Red Lyon was my favorite bar in Lawrence. I've made my last visit. The over-reaction by the downtown Lawrence merchants is truly embarrassing. It's a convincing argument -- one day out of 730 is going to crush the Lawrence economy.

Call To Action-Border War

It's really time to start concentrating on Central Michigan, but since tickets went on sale to the public this week, I guess we can re-hash the Arrowhead Border War topic a little more, right?

Reading this thread on the Grid today, reminded me that the fans really have the opportunity to eliminate one of the major objections to moving this game. Most KU fans feel there is no way Missouri can beat us in Memorial. It is indeed a law of nature that can only be reversed by bringing in a truly inept coach (see 2001). Therefore, the conclusion is that we've essentially given up a guaranteed win against our most hated rival. Perhaps there is some merit to that. Maybe it's no longer the lock that it would have been in Lawrence. However, if KU can pull 50,000* into Arrowhead it could really start to seem like a friendly environment. Remember, KU fans put together a pretty nice crowd at a neutral site in Fort Worth and that along with an inferior, but decent opponent helped the Hawks to a nice win. So, get your crimson and blue buddies and get out to Arrowhead. There's not much we can do about the other complaints (tradition, Lawrence merchants), but we can certainly be a factor in the outcome of the game.

*How is this possible? 20,000 KU season tickets already sold. 16,000 Chiefs season ticket holders bought in which means 8,000 KU fans. The students will bring another 10,000 to the equation (8000 for pessimists). That's 36-38,000. So, KU fans need to purchase 10-15,000 season tickets to reach the magical 50,000 majority. It really doesn't seem that far away.

Border War History Lesson

What can I say? I should have known the KC Star was behind the whole thing.

"Rumor was that the Kansas City Star and Journal were peeved at KU and MU because they hadn’t been given some game tickets they counted on and put Tebeau up to the double-take to “discipline” the schools. Whatever, Lansdon wasn’t buying it."

Border War Tickets Are Moving

Arrowhead Border War Has 44,000 Tickets Sold

The game appears to be on track for a near-capacity crowd as the KC Star is reporting that 44,000 tickets have already been sold. Tickets go on sale to the public on August 1, but the current breakdown looks like this:

"about 16,000 tickets have been purchased through the Chiefs’ season-ticket base, with 22,000 more from KU, where the game is included in the season-ticket package. Missouri has sold about 6,000 tickets through an initial Tiger Scholarship Fund offering"

With what looks like a 30,000 to 14,000 early advantage, KU might be able to have a majority base at the Arrowhead event. KU season ticket holders just received a mailer for away game ticket purchases as well as additional Arrowhead seats. That should provide another boost. As word spreads about the demand and possibility for a sellout, casual fans will probably start to get motivated right at the August 1 date. With the early lead, KU fans should be scheming to reach the 50,000 number and claim Arrowhead for the 2007 edition of the Border War.

For reasons why this is all bad, check out the gridiron board thread.

Downtown Lawrence: Move Forward

City Continues To Live in the Past

I haven't even finished the LJW World anti-Arrowhead article yet, but this caught my eye and I had to post it right away ...

"That money — which would have gone for everything from bratwurst for barbecues to beer in bars and holiday gifts to be purchased on Massachusetts Street — will be spent in Missouri instead, said David Darling, a retired Kansas State University economist hired by the newspaper to assess the effects of shifting the game to Arrowhead Stadium."

I'll have more on this later.

Arrowhead Spin: University Event No More

The Benefits of Moving Off-Campus

Now that the move has been made, I've had a few days to reflect and it's time to embrace the positives. One interesting aspect that occurred to me is how the creation of this event affects Kansas State football. Effectively, they've been left out in the cold on this deal and it really gives the Kansas and Missouri football programs a big recruiting plus, not to mention the million dollar profit. The media hype surrounding the Arrowhead version of the Border War will be massive in year one, and if the dreamers get their wish and it ends up at 80k in attendance, that hype will continue each year. If the game becomes the idealistic version that Lew Perkins envisions, KSU really has nothing that they can do to match this type of annual spectacle (other than go to the Big 12 championship game). In fact, with the exception Texas and Oklahoma, no other football team in the conference can match this event. Nebraska can't even match this. Are they going to play Colorado in Denver? Oklahoma at Arrowhead? No way, there's no real benefit to either of the schools. Of course, at Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma and Texas A&M, every home game is an event that can match the level of a capacity Arrowhead stadium. So, let's just say, that if this game goes big-time, it'll be one thing both Kansas and Missouri can point to as a major weapon in competing with the big boys of the conference. Most importantly, it looks every recruit in Kansas and western Missouri will have to factor in the possibility of playing in this game.

Take heart Kansas State fans. There are a few factors that could wreck this thing before it builds momentum.

  • One bad season by either team in either of the two years could really set back attendance
  • Two straight Missouri wins (in fact, KU really needs to win game one for this to survive)

Plus there's the wildcard, and it's no secret. The two schools really don't get along. Even with millions on the table, this will be an uneasy alliance. If one school or the other even perceives an advantage for the other school, hasta la vista Arrowhead.

Question

Did Blake Lawrence commit too early. Can you really pass on the opportunity to play in a big-time game at Arrowhead as a Kansas City football player? Looks like Tony Temple made a good call. Josh Freeman, not so much.

Local Merchants

Hey, I'm not going to begrudge you your rightful earnings made from the efforts of young men clashing in the gladiator-type arena of violence that is college football. However, if you can't see the potential future revenue possibilities on the local side, then I guess you'll just have to whine about it for two years. And perhaps, retail just isn't your gig. This is simple. If it goes big-time, you'll get your payback. If it misses, you lost one game. Take a risk.
