Opponent Update | Week #13

This department got skipped during the short week along with my Big 12 rankings. We're getting back on track this week. The schedule doesn't look any better. CMU will play for the MAC Championship. A&M's win over Texas helped. OSU's loss didn't. K-State, wow. The best thing to be said is it goes 180 degrees next year with a road trip to South Florida for the non-con schedule. We'll add Texas, OU and Tech to the conference slate with OU being a road game. In the division, we'll travel to Nebraska and Iowa State. The interesting thing about that all next year the media will act like we scheduled tougher due to the criticism of this year's schedule. Yeah, I know -- the guys at ESPN have to make a living too.

Don't Even Try

At this point, looking back pretty much serves no purpose. Here's another department that won't make it back next year. For now though, we'll plod on to complete the series for 2007. So, including OSU, KU opponents were 2-6 this past weekend. The winners were Nebraska and CMU. The Chips have quietly moved to a 5-0 and secured their division title. Still, they're no powehouse. They gave up 70 to Clemson, 52 to KU and 45 to Purdue. Of course, those were all road games. Right now, KU's best opponent is as we suspected -- OSU with a #39 Sagarin ranking.

Opponent Update | Week #9

This Week: Nebraska

Welcome to bizzaro world. Nebraska rides into Lawrence this Saturday with a back-up QB and a four-game losing streak. The Jayhawks are now a 17.5-point favorite (Keller injury probably moved the line) and Kansas fans smell blood in the water. The reality is that Nebraska is going to come into Lawrence and play their guts out. Losing to Kansas is like a line in the sand for that program -- they're desparate and we'll get their best shot, but the game is in Lawrence and the KU football fans have been looking for a big one to celebrate. Plus, despite the fact that we've looked like the better team the last three years, the Hawks still have only one win to show for the efforts.

Prep yourself for the Huskers this Saturday by checking in on huskernetwork.com -- a web page consolidating all of the blog news feeds on Nebraska football. Big12digest.com is good for all of the conference blog feeds.

Forget the Non-Con

Since we've now played enough conference games to match the non-con season, perhaps we can just let go of September now. The easy schedule criticism is starting to ring a little hollow. KU got an easy home win against Baylor, but the other three wins came on the road against likely bowl teams. Colorado stepped up and knocked off Tech in Lubbock, which wasn't surprising to KU fans. If KSU could have closed out OSU, they'd be riding a three-game win streak right now. The final story has yet to be written on A&M, but they still stand at 6-3 and clearly play tough at home. Note on the non-cons, CMU did pick up another conference win and they are 4-0 in the MAC.

Opponent Update | Week #8

This Week: Texas A&M

This may be the most disrespected 6-2 team in history. A lot of people watched the Miami beatdown and the Tech game didn't help. No one was impressed by the close call with Fresno State either. Throw on the high cost of insider information and Aggie land has gone a little wacko. Still, this is a big physical team with great athletes. The will be KU's biggest challenge of the year, but from a defensive standpoint, at least the game plan is simple and focused. Stopping the run is what the Blue Steel defense does, so it'll be about execution for the Hawks. Prep yourself for the Aggies this Saturday by checking in on texasaggiedigest.com -- a web page consolidating all of the blog news feeds on A&M. What Happened to the Once Mighty MAC?

Central Michigan got mauled 70-14 at Clemson yet they stand atop their division in the MAC Conference. Remember when BCS teams had to take these teams seriously? Toledo picks up the lone win of the week -- a 43-40 squeaker against Ohio (3-5) at the Glass Bowl. With KSU and Baylor falling, KU's opponents were 1-6 on the week. Nice.

Opponent Update | Week #7

This Week: Colorado

When the Buffs knocked off Big 12 heavyweight Oklahoma in Boulder, it looked there was another contender in the North race. After getting smoked by the Cats in Manhattan this past Saturday, the forecast has changed. Still, CU gets an immediate shot at redemption as they host our division leading Hawks this week. Colorado's only loss in Boulder this year is to Florida State and KU hasn't won there since 1995. CMU Leads Division

Central Michigan took the one win for the non-con opponents this week with a 47-23 home victory over Army. Quietly, the 4-3 Chippewas have moved to 3-0 in the MAC and are leading the West division. Good luck at Clemson next week. KU's best friend on the schedule is Kansas State. Sandwiched around their home loss to KU are impressive wins at Texas and against Colorado. The next best win out there for this crew is Toledo over Iowa State.

Opponent Update | Week #6

This Week: Baylor

If you think Baylor looks like a football program that has been cursed, you are correct. Checkout BearMeat for the latest curse cast toward Waco. They'll travel to Lawrence with a 3-3 record, but they've struggled against the quality opponents. They put up 23 points against a solid Colorado defense and they do throw the ball quite a bit (60 times versus CU). In other words, they shouldn't be taken lightly, even on the road. Of course, taking the Bears lightly won't be a problem for KU after last year's game. The Hawks would surely feel some sort of redemption by becoming bowl eligible against Baylor this Saturday -- the collapse in Waco cost the Hawks a bowl trip last year (see also Toledo, Texas A&M, OSU). Prep yourself for the Bear Fight this Saturday by checking in on Baylornetwork.com -- a web page consolidating all of the blog news feeds from the world of Waco. Big12digest.com is good for all of the conference blog feeds.

Revenge of the Cupcakes

Wow. KU's opponents were 3-2 this Saturday, which includes the KSU loss to the Hawks. After the performance in Lincoln, it was a little surprising to see Ball State fall 58-38 to CMU at home. SE Louisiana played at their level and picked up a solid 21-3 win. How about that impressive 35-34 beating of mighty Liberty for the Rockets? FIU moves to 0-6, but they just played two of the toughest teams in the conference. This week they go on the road, but ULM presents a better opportunity to end the losing streak.

Opponent Update | Week #5

This Week: Kansas State

I think we're all pretty in touch with what the in-state rivals have accomplished thus far for the 2007 campaign. The scheduling of a road game at Auburn came under some question, but after clearing out Texas, Captain Ron does indeed look Scary Smart ... or at least Mack Brown Smart. The Wild ones are the real deal and that's what makes this year's edition of the Sunflower Smackdown extra special fun times. It's like a heavyweight prize fight with KSU either retaining a top 25 spot or the challenger KU stealing that spot away. Prep yourself for the trip to Manhattan this week by looking in on the Kansas State Network -- a page consolidating all of the blog news feeds from the world of purple.

The Victim List

This group has moved into the category of pathetic. Central Michigan gets a 35-10 win over N. Illinois. Too little, too late. Thankfully, conference season is here and we can start to look at some solid competition.

Opponent Update -- Week #4

Toledo picks up a legitimate win for the non-cons with a 36-35 home win over Iowa State. The victory moves the group to 3-13 overall. Central Michigan is hardly worth talking about anymore after a 14-44 lost to N. Dakota State. Toledo has got to be kicking themselves over their loss to the Chips in week #2. SLU is now 1-3 after falling to another FBS team -- 27-35 at Tulane.

Again, from a first hand look perspective, FIU looked to be the best team that KU faced this year. You'd think that they make some noise in the Sun Belt, but they are getting ready for back-to-back weeks against two of the best teams in the conference -- @ Middle Tennessee, then Troy (beat OSU). They also play a crazy schedule in that seven of their first nine are on the road. In fact, they only play five home games all year.

Opponent Update -- Week #3

Probably the most discouraging news of the weekend was the CMU perfomance against Purdue (L 22-45). Anyone that got a chance to watch the first half of that one knows that the Chippewas didn't even belong on the field with Purdue. SE Louisiana stepped down a notch and posted a ludicrous 79-7 score agains Kentuckey Wesleyan, doubling the win total for KU's non-cons (2-10).

So, 0-3 Florida International is another cupcake right? Maybe, but they've played an insane schedule and only the only blow out was at Penn State (59-0). Keeping the scores respectable against Maryland and Miami should be an indicator that the 'Hawks need to bring their "A" game. Are the Panther's beat up emotionally after that stretch or are they getting better? We'll see on Saturday.

Non-Con prediction -- Last week, I went out on a limb to predict the SLU win. This week, I'll say that Toledo drops one in the Glass Bowl to ISU, which will frustrate KU fans.

Opponent Update -- Week #1

Out of the gate, the critics are pretty solid in calling out the non-con schedule for KU. Their record for opening weekend was 0-4. Of course, all four teams stepped up to play teams at a higher level, so we'll learn a little bit more this weekend when Central Michigan hosts Toledo. The Rockets spent Saturday getting pasted by Purdue 52-24 at the mighty Glass Bowl. SE Louisiana lost at New Mexico St. 35-14, which is similar to last year's score (30-15), but the Aggies did return 17 players. Florida International didn't put up much of a fight at #17 Penn State losing 59-0. Not really a great place to go to end a losing streak. KU did do well in the Sagarin Rankings by posting a big score and moving up to #35.
