Bill Young, Washington and Miami

Ryan Wood mentioned in his notes this weekend that the Seattle Times was indicating that Bill Young was a candidate for their defensive coordinator position. The only reference I found at that site was this blog entry --  http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/huskyfootball/2008/01/wednesday_morning_notes_1.html

A critical entry in the post is this:

"I have not been able to confirm this through any official channels, so I'm passing it along here merely as a rumor."

There is now a mention on CSTV that also adds Miami as a possibility: http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/stories/011408aav.html

One thing, I've spent some time discussing Bill Young versus the spread. Let me state officially that I think he is the best d-coordinator in the Big 12 and one of the biggest single factors for the overall turnaround at KU. My comments about Bill versus the spread apply to most d-coordinators. Anyway, I had to relieve myself of some guilt in case he leaves.

I have zero credibility since I said Tim Beck likely wouldn't leave for a lateral move; however, every indication has been that Bill loves Lawrence and is ready to settle in. I would really hate to lose him.

Recruiting Update: Rod Harris, Darius Parish

KU added Blinn County JUCO wide receiver Rod Harris to the 2008 list of verbal commitments this weekend according to Rivals.com. Harris is leaving Blinn County after one year and judging by his video the 6-2/190 lb. wide out comes to Kansas ready to play. Rivals awarded him three stars.

KU also added a big-time defensive tackle recruit Darius Parish from Wichita during the build up to the Orange Bowl. Rivals lists the three-star recruit as commited to Jayhawks way back on 12/28. Parish has the size already at 325 lb. on a 6-3 frame.

Andy Gosterheldt Part II

The final part of the Gosterheldt interview from last week.

HD: People seemed surprised by the breakout season for the Hawks. What’s your take?

Andy: Looking at the schedule and thinking back to 2006, things worked out about the way I expected -- almost. CMU was supposed to be a challenge, but you knew if you won that one, you had a shot at 4-0 with a bye week before the KSU game. Steal one in Manhattan, then 7-0 looks possible because Colorado is still in the early stages. The only thing that confused the issue with CU was their win over OU. A&M was a tough match-up. Nebraska, c’mon – we don’t lose to North teams in Lawrence. OSU was the surprise for me. I would have thought we drop that one and beat Mizzou. Taking out the number three team in a BCS bowl was definitely a bonus.

HD: Speaking of Mizzou, what’s up with that?

Andy:
Bill Young still hasn’t figured out the spread. He’s not alone in that, but it’s something that needs to be solved. Bill wants to play it fairly straight, but he’s going to have to get outside of his box to conquer that mountain. The true spread is successful because the offense as a whole evaluates the defense, knows the weakness and exposes it before there is time to react. On top of the fact that they are putting a lot of targets on the field and the QBs are trained to rapidly move through the progression. Defenses are behind the curve and O-coordinators currently can prepare an offense for the general approaches that a defense can take. It’s time for innovation on the defensive side of the ball. The main thing is you’ve got to confuse the offense. On top of that, you’ll have to change that approach throughout the game, because opposing offensive coordinators will analyze your approach and expose you within three to four series..

HD: That’s pretty in depth. Are you a Pee-Wee league coach or something?

Andy: No, I just play one on the internet. It's not really rocket science. I think most fans are pretty in touch with what's going on with the spread in college football right now.

HD: What’s your recruiting take so far?

Andy: Three stars across the board is definitely a step up. I definitely thought we’d see more four-star players, but I think we’ve learned to trust the recruiting evaluations of this staff. I expect 2010 to be an awesome year.

HD: So, the new offices are going in south of Memorial Stadium. What’s next on you list of improvements?

Andy: Just a minor thing. Do something with the chain link blue fence in the south end zone. A combination concrete and black wrought iron structure that matches the current look of the Memorial concourses out to do the trick. Maybe a hedge line or something. Also, there are a few too many vehicles randomly parked inside the fence. It looks bush league on TV.

HD: Makes sense. Are we ready for more seats?

Andy: Where we’re going, yes. Still, you can wait another year and let ticket demand build up. A win in South Florida combined with only seven home games could really make Memorial Stadium a hot ticket next year.

HD: How about a new video board? You know they basically have drive-in movie type boards at Texas and Nebraska.

Andy: What a waste. Honestly, other than the opening video, they don’t add much to the game day experience. Sure you want to see a replay, but our relatively new board works fine for that. That part of the college arms race is purely for recruiting. Still, I suppose it’s something that needs to be addressed. I guess a giant curved board or pair of boards above the north bowl might be cool. Sort of an extension of the existing ad/stat boards.

HD: So, what does the Orange Bowl win mean?

Andy: Everything for KU, but obviously from a national perspective, I guess nothing. So another year of KU playing with a chip on their shoulder. The big thing though is old Big 8 people consider the Orange Bowl a tradition just under the Rose. Sneaking in there and snagging an Orange Bowl trophy is nice. It’s difficult for Big 12 teams to get in there these days and it’s unlikely we’ll get back to that particular bowl for a while. At least, we’ll start next year ranked and this team has a taste of that national spotlight. Take care of business and maybe we can get back to Miami.

HD: That seems ambitious.

Andy: Like I said, once you get a taste, that’s not going away -- especially when the core group of players that lived it will be back. Still, even with an Orange Bowl trophy in the case, I’d say KU fans would really like to get a Big 12 trophy. That NC nonsense is out of your control, but a conference championship is decided on the field.

HD: All right. To wrap up, what’s the next thing KU fans should have on their calendar?

Andy: Other than signing day, a chance to check out A.J. Steward at the spring game.

Play With Honor

I never expected the conversion of a KSU fan, but I am pleased that even if the pollsters weren't watching, a lot of people took note of Mark Mangino opting not to go for the TD on the final play in the Orange Bowl. When Mangino first arrived at KU, he talked about having a football program that Kansas fans could be proud to follow. Mission accomplished.

Andy Gosterheldt Interview, Part I

Every now and then I like to catch up with long-suffering KU football fan, Andy Gosterheldt. Still, typing up the notes, so this will be a two- or three-part piece.

HD: Last time we checked in with you, you were proposing some crazy theory about the performance of in-state QBs versus out of state for KU. Are you gloating over the performance of Todd Reesing this year?

Andy: Gloating is so cliché for the sports media. I would just like everyone to remember the rule and that I came up with it and that I was right and to just never doubt me again and perhaps build a 15-foot statue in my honor.

HD: To recap, your theory was that you need a QB from out of state at KU. Local QBs have an ingrained association with KU’s lack of a winning tradition in football. Therefore, when a local kid goes up against a tradition football school, like say A&M, there’s a thought in the back of his head that says KU can’t beat A&M. For a kid from say, Texas, that wouldn’t be a factor.

Andy: Exactly. The rule actually applies to a few other schools as well.

HD: Are you bashing Josh Freeman.

Andy: Absolutely not.

HD: Are you bashing Kerry Meier?

Andy: No. Actually, I thought he might have a chance to disprove the theory. He looked rough at times last year, but he was in-experienced and played most of the season with a bad shoulder. Kerry’s a talented athlete and he looks great at wide receiver – I think the big concern is durability, especially when you are selecting a starting QB.

HD: Okay, so the Hawks lose Tim Beck, Aqib Talib and Anthony Collins. What does that mean for 2008?

Andy: I think we were well prepared for the loss of Talib. We were prepped for Collins as well. For a lateral move, the Tim Beck departure makes little sense, but maybe he likes to hang around guys that wear red pants. Whatever you’re into, I guess. Recruiting-wise that hurts a little in the middle of what should be our greatest recruiting year ever. Still, we’ve lost good recruiters before and the classes have improved steadily each year.

HD: So the biggest impact in losing that trio is just Beck’s recruiting?

Andy: From the Beck perspective, I would expect on the field improvement from the receiving unit in the future. Look at the past few years. The wideouts at KU have some talent, but have trouble getting separation at times. Plus, no one ever seems to get better at the position. Way too many dropped balls from this unit. Also, Ed Warriner will probably be involved in the recruitment of this position and let’s just say I’m pretty impressed with his work thus far.

Overall though, I’d say the biggest blow is Collins. Replacing two offensive tackles is tricky. Although, against Iowa State few people noticed that Collins was out of the line-up. Still, when you’re talking about the big boys up front experience and numbers count.

Really, The Russians?

Like the Soviet Union Russians? That seems a little excessive:

“This is a touchy situation,” DeWerff said. “I don’t like being second-best. If KU was playing the Russians, I’d root for the Russians. K-State just has to continue to get better. It has to.”

Outlook Reminder: Call Michael Rohr (Derby, Kansas), January 2019.

KSU Love for Mangino

Just reading between the lines here, but I don't think our friend at Bring on the Cats likes Mark Mangino. Where's the love, man? Mangino and the Hawks just brought instant credibility to the Big 12 North*. Oh well, I suppose I understand. I wasn't exactly best friends with Bill Snyder.

BOTC Excerpt:

Mangino believes that, but for a few 'beaker mistakes, they would have beaten us by more.  I really can't stop laughing at that comment.  It's really funny that Mangino focuses only on his own team's mistakes, and just assumes that K-State played an absolutely perfect game.  You're absolutely right, Mangino.  K-State did not make any mistakes that could have made the game closer, and yet you didn't see our coach making those excuses.

It reminds me of a friend of mine who would get irritated when other golfers complained after rounds that they could have shot a better score if they would have made this putt or that putt, or if they wouldn't have gotten a bad bounce.  He always liked to point out the two 30+ foot putts they made, as well as the ball that was headed for the lake but bounced off the rocks.  Point is, your team will always make mistakes, but so will the other team.

*I guess the mutigers win helped as well with a little respect for the division.
