HD Player of the Week: Todd Reesing

Player of the Week

It was pretty much a team effort against CU, but Todd Reesing stoodout by playing smart. Colorado mixed it up quite a bit and played good coverage. Reesing didn't force anything and used his feet to keep drives alive. He ended up 20/29 passing with 153 yards and a TD. He also led the Jayhawks in rushing with 84 yards on seven carries.

Honorable Mention: James Holt (15 tackles, 2 for loss), Joe Mortensen (11 tackles), Scott Webb (FGs 48, 35), Justin Thornton (7 tackles, INT, 1 pass defended), Kyle Tucker (43.8 yard ave/punt)

Play of the Week

The one-step 48 yard field goal by Scott Webb. Credit Kyle Tucker for pulling it down and credit Todd Reesing for setting it all up with the 53-yard scramble.

Team of the Week

As a KU fan, I gotta go with Rutgers for knocking off unbeaten South Florida to help KU move up. More Thursday night magic for the Scarlet Knights. Of course, Vandy knocking off South Carolina was a nice little treat as well.

KU May Be Converting Me

Fall Madness

It's no secret that I've been a proponent of a playoff for college football pretty much since birth. However, KU's run to a 7-0 record has me thinking a little different. When your team is undefeated, it takes on the feel of a hoops team going deep into March. Each week is survive and advance and although the "experts" near and far assure us each week that the Jayhawks will fall, they continue to advance. Five teams are still standing and all I care about right now is watching Boston College on Thursday night to see if another door can open for the Jayhawks.

A playoff system has always been appealing to me, but it's pretty clear now that in the Big 12 we should be up for the status quo. The split divisions and championship game pretty much guarantee an undefeated Big 12 champion an invite to the big game. It always been there, but the concept is a little more tangible when your team is riding high in the BCS standings.

Of course, it works that way for all BCS conferences with championship games, but the trick is running the table. Speaking of which, that explains why KU is drawing so much heat. There's such a long way to go, but like the 1998 Wildcats, the establishment of college football is starting to sweat the fact that a KU team that had a once-in-a-decade soft non-con is edging uncomfortably close to crashing the big party.

Texas A&M is their latest road block, but faith in the Aggies must be minimal as the attacks against Kansas intensify. The thought of KU slipping through the next four and going into the Arrowhead game with 50,000 crimson and blue fans behind them is enough to make em' sweat.

So the debate and criticism continue while KU fans enjoy the ride ... the truth is each week feels like a playoff game and I like it.

Opponent Update | Week #8

This Week: Texas A&M

This may be the most disrespected 6-2 team in history. A lot of people watched the Miami beatdown and the Tech game didn't help. No one was impressed by the close call with Fresno State either. Throw on the high cost of insider information and Aggie land has gone a little wacko. Still, this is a big physical team with great athletes. The will be KU's biggest challenge of the year, but from a defensive standpoint, at least the game plan is simple and focused. Stopping the run is what the Blue Steel defense does, so it'll be about execution for the Hawks. Prep yourself for the Aggies this Saturday by checking in on texasaggiedigest.com -- a web page consolidating all of the blog news feeds on A&M. Big12digest.com is good for all of the conference blog feeds.

What Happened to the Once Mighty MAC?

Central Michigan got mauled 70-14 at Clemson yet they stand atop their division in the MAC Conference. Remember when BCS teams had to take these teams seriously? Toledo picks up the lone win of the week -- a 43-40 squeaker against Ohio (3-5) at the Glass Bowl. With KSU and Baylor falling, KU's opponents were 1-6 on the week. Nice.

Three-Star Quarterback Kale Pick to KU | Video

Rivals is reporting that three-star quarterback Kale Pick has verbally commited to Kansas. This comes after the 6-1, 198 lb. senior from Dodge City High School backed out of a commitment to Arkansas on Sunday night. This looks like a solid pick up as he is listed as the #11 dual-threat QB in the country and runs a 4.5 forty. Other schools on his list included Kansas State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Rice, Iowa State, Colorado State and SMU.

Another note from Phog.net -- they list him as 6-2 and rank him as the 33rd best QB nationally.

Scott Webb: Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week

The one-step 48-yarder must have sealed it ...

From the Big 12 site

"Scott Webb, Sr, PK, Kansas (Tulsa, Okla.) Scott Webb booted a pair of field goals to help lift Kansas to a 19-14 victory at Colorado. Webb converted on kicks from 48 and 35 yards out as KU remained undefeated on the year and claimed consecutive road wins in the same season for the first time since 1995."

Stephen McGee (Texas A&M) and Cornelius "Pig" Brown (Missouri) took the offensive and defensive honors.

Around the North | Week #8

Screaming for Vengeance

Respect. It will be earned one team at a time for Kansas (7-0, 3-0). Teams in the north understand what the Hawks are all about, but the south division teams probably assume that there is some sort of typo when they look at KU's record. The Jayhawks aren't even on the Aggies radar at this point. But this Saturday's trip to College Station isn't about 8-0, BCS rankings or getting closer to that north division title. It's about one game, one chance to avenge the aborted win at Memorial Stadium last year. It ended KU's nine-game win streak in Lawrence and rocked the foundation of Mark Mangino's regime in Lawrence. It won't be quite like the media circus that the visit from Texas will generate next year, but for revenge games, this re-match with the Aggies ranks near the top of the list. Get some. Kansas opened as a 2-point favorite for the road trip to College Station.

It's official. Missouri (6-1, 2-1) has a defense. I think you get invited to the White House if you hold Texas Tech to 10 points. The Border War = the Battle for the North. Kansas City wanted to land a Super Bowl. This will be even better. The Tigers are a 28.5-point favorite versus Iowa State in Columbia this Saturday.

Well, I suppose Kansas State (4-3, 2-2) deserved that after stealing last year's matchup with OSU. It was cruel though. The Wildcats have officially entered the "need help" zone for their division title hopes. The Cats will start thinking about securing the seven wins needed for a bowl as the schedule turns favorable -- Baylor, @ISU and @Nebraska. They can play spoiler when Mizzou comes to town on November 17. This week the Wildcats are 24.5 favorites this Saturday versus Baylor.

The loss to KU was pretty much the last stand for Colorado (4-4, 2-2) as far as division hopes go. Still, it's a pretty good turn around for the Buffs this year. They'll want to win three of the next four to secure a bowl bid (KU doctrine -- six wins probably doesn't do it). They travel to Tech this week, then host Missouri. They'll have to win one of those two, but the schedule closes out with winnable games at Iowa State and a visit from the Cornhuskers. This Saturday CU is 12.5-point underdog in Lubbock.

For Nebraska (4-4, 1-3) fans this might be a good time to take up a new Saturday hobby. It should get better next year, but the Huskers have a horrible stretch coming up -- @Texas, @Kansas, Kansas State, @Colorado. On the flip side, Double Extra Point is the hands down winner in the photography category for Big 12 blogs for 207. The Corn opened as a 20-point underdog to Texas.

Great scott! What am I to make of Iowa State (1-6, 0-3) holding OU to 17 points? Let's spin it this way -- OU may not be as good as everyone thinks. How about this? The North and South are pretty even this year. Credit the Clones for fighting hard at home. I'm glad we don't have to go to Jack Trice this year. If ISU can give Mizzou a game in Columbia, Gene Chizik will start making friends in Ames.

North Sagarin Rankings -- Rank/Schedule

Tough Enough

"All things being equal for two teams in an American football contest, the club with the better quarterback generally wins."
--William Shakespeare

Forget the past folks. This team only knows how to win. There's no need to pace around the living room, sweating it out. If you control the line of scrimmage and you have a gunslinger at the QB position, the result is never in question. But it's KU football, you say. Damn straight -- it's KU football and we're 7-0. We control the north and we're eating up conference road wins (three of four and two straight, my man). Get used to it and enjoy the game next Saturday night. The quarterback from Austin is going back to play his first game in Texas and we all know he's got a little something to prove. So does KU. The south hasn't gotten the message yet. They will.

Final Stats |  Notes |  Photo Gallery

From Leawood

  • It's interesting how quickly the entire team/program has taken on the "balls out" attitude of Todd Reesing. Nothing clarified that more than James McClinton trying to lateral the ball in a clear fall on the ground situation. McClinton wanted more. Sometimes it gets you in trouble, but it's the attitude that gets you wins.
  • If Scott Webb can make it from 48 yards with one step, what's his range with two or three? 65 yards?
  • If Kyle Tucker doesn't snag that high snap it looks like it would have landed about 60 yards behind the line of scrimmage.
  • When Todd Reesing rambled for 53 yards, the CU defense had to have a "What is it with this guy?" moment.
  • I'm surprised Dezmon Briscoe got shut out. Maybe it was a delayed SI curse. Wait -- KU is officially immune to all curses. Must have just been good coverage by CU.
  • Delay of game on the defense? Okay. Plus, evidently running into the punter is not a penalty at 5000 feet.
  • Thanks to multiple high definition reviews, the secret is out on one of our linebackers. It's been there all along, but everyone knows now. However, I wouldn't say it's an issue of not understanding assignments or knowing where to be. The speed and knowledge is there, it's really just poor tackling mechanics in the open field. The focus has been a little too much on making the big hit. I believe the talent is there ... just get the job done.
  • The defensive ends showed improvement. I'm becoming a Jake Laptad fan.
  • James Holt looked good on ESPN -- 15 tackles!

Game Day Notes -- KU @ Colorado

Right Now

Series: Colorado 41-22-3
Time: 4:30 p.m.
TV: ESPN HD
Line: KU (-4)

"First they laugh at you, then they ignore you, then they fight you, then you win."
- Mahatma Gandhi on the 2007 KU football team*

The Rundown
The non-con and overall schedule drew plenty of ridicule this summer and fall. There was a brief acknowledgement of the road win at Kansas State, then a sudden media silence. Today, the fight starts. Over a sixty minute period of football this afternoon the 2007 Jayhawks have the opportunity to redefine their image in front of a national television audience. Plus, they can send a direct message to the conference and establish a firm grip on the North division. The challenge? Win a true road game against a 4-3 team that knocked off OU. The Buffaloes will have the home field, but it still measures 100 yards in length. KU has put up big numbers this year, but they actually haven't delivered their best effort yet. There is room for improvement. A few dropped balls here and there, consistency out of the punting game. It's a work in progress. Today is the time to turn it on and take what has been building since 2002. This is why we hired Mangino, so take it.

The Key
KU's front seven needs to make Cody Hawkins miserable for four quarters

Guide to Watching the Game Via Television for the Hardcore KU Tailgater**

  • Feel free to pop up the tent in the front yard and ease into a 12-pack
  • Display your flag prominently -- inside the house, outside, on the car, etc.
  • Prepare for commentators that will have zero knowledge about KU football. If it hurts too much, turn off the sound.
  • It's okay to stand during the game
  • Don't ever lose your sense of humor, with a gunner like Todd Reesing, the Hawks have the ability to overcome
  • Fun TV fact -- If memory serves me correct, this blogger has not witnessed a KU TV win live since the 1995 Aloha Bowl (I went to the Fort Worth Bowl  and this year's KSU game [I did watch the internet live feed of the 2004 MU win])

*Quote was re-arranged for editorial purposes. It's possible Ghandi was talking about something other than football.
**Defined as fan that has attended six games so far this year.

Big 12 Power Rankings | Week #7

1) Kansas (6-0, 2-0) #16 CBS
KU as #1 in the Big 12? Hey, they're undefeated and still improving. OU gets the big home win against MU, but the loss to Colorado is a red flag (especially after the CU performance in Manhattan). The same will apply to the Jayhawks who are getting minimal respect locally and nationwide. Another road win would help.

The Sooners are #2 in my poll, but still on track to reach that national title game -- assuming of course they can survive this week's North division road trip. Last time, not so hot.
