2008 KU Football To Do/Wish List -- 2/3 Season Report

So it's time for our second check progress on the list from this past summer:

--Big 12 Championship
1/3 Musicians like to say a bad practice makes for a good performance. September was a little mediocre, so let's assume the Jayhawks show us awesome in October

2/3 October wasn't awesome, but it wasn't a complete disaster either (well the home loss to Tech was). The Jayhawks were 2-2 which is far better than most pre-2007 Mangino Octobers. KU is still in the mix for a Big 12 title game birth, but it's on the line tomorrow

--Charles Gordon is avenged on November 15, 2008
1/3 It shall be done

2/3 I'm really starting to sweat this one

--A full house for opening day (borrowed from 2007)

Check (with a bonus sellout vs Sam Houston)

2/3 Paid attendance has been awesome this year. Stamina not so good, but you can't blame anyone for walking out of the Tech game, can you?

--The team properly channels the nationwide "just a scheduling fluke" media campaign and comes into the season with the exact right amount of focused anger/adrenaline
1/3 Nope

2/3 And still more no

--Clint Bowen solves the spread offense
1/3 Haven't seen anything new yet

2/3 Couldn't be further from solving it (advice from Don Draper -- think about it real hard, then let it go)

--Maxwell Onyegbule gets to Chase Daniel ... every down.
1/3 Hopefully, he's saving it all up for that one game

2/3 The improvement is there, but the dominance is still not

--Mike Riveragets to Chase Daniel ... every down.
1/3 Our best pass rusher against USF, but he didn't start against Sam Houston. There are rumors about a possible injury

2/3 Yeah, he's been hurt. So has Joe M, which makes for a pretty forgettable senior season so far for the crew. Holt looks good though.

--RJ Jr and Darius Parish erase my fond memories of James McClinton
1/3 Actually, if you watch the interior play they're not doing too bad. Jamal Greene has shown some flashes as well. We haven't quite seen the consistent jump and penetration that McClinton had last year, but remember it took him a few years to get there as well.

2/3 Despite three losses (Haselhorst, RJ and Caleb) now plus McClinton, I really don't feel like these guys are the issue. Jamal Green continues to impress me. RJ was having a pretty decent season. The future looks bright. Darius will get some big time play against KSU

--Todd Reesing 2008 exceeds TR 2007
1/3 Check

2/3 At least from a statistical standpoint we've got a little slippage here. Eight intercepts so far with just seven last year. They need to utilize the run more now that Jake looks sharp

--Dexton Fields and Dezmon Briscoe both go over 1,000
1/3 Would love to see Fields back for Iowa State. Seems to have big games against the Clones. Briscoe is pretty much on target despite a forgettable evening in Tampa and losing his start against Sam Houston. I'm pretty sure the Breeze will get the message. Time to be a leader.

2/3 Obviously, Fields got hurt. The Breeze rocked it against OU and I still think he'll get a 300-yard game before he leaves the Hawks. On target for DB. We'll need extra games for DF, but K-10 will make it.

--Ed Warriner blows my mind by staying ahead of the Big 12 with further innovation to last year's scheme
1/3 Other than a greater reliance on the shuttle pass, nothing new here and a season's worth of film has our opponents knowing us well. Todd Reesing will have to continue to pull rabbits out of the hat if we don't start showing some new features.

2/3 Pretty disappointing. KU has shown two back sets on occasion on those plays generally pan out. Defenses seem to error on covering two backs out of the backfield, but we have not utilized that package enough. Angus can catch, so can JC and if you don't like those guys, Herford offers a similar feel. I did like the implementation of the option which helps Jake, but otherwise, looks like the same old, same old and after a year of studying film, teams know what makes Reesing uncomfortable and where he likes to go.

--Find a confident punt returner that can be a threat
1/3 Check

2/3 How would we know? Haven't seen anybody punt for a while.

--Jeff Spikes lives up to the hype
1/3 Still at the front of the curve, but he has his moments.

2/3 Not living up to the hype, but certainly has come along. Texas Tech has two fantastic defensive ends, so there were bad moments, but the running game as improved since he flipped sides with Hatch. The future is bright here. Too bad we have to replace the entire interior again next year.

--Marcus Herford becomes a legitimate Big 12 wide receiver threat (last chance man)
1/3 I'm not giving up the dream, but I would like to see the kick returns improve

2/3 He had a vintage 2007 return against Tech right? Let's build on that.

--Jake Sharp -- 80 yard TD run at any point in the conference season or in the state of Florida
1/3 Hmmm. Let's adjust this to an 8 yard TD run

2/3 Jake's broken some big gainers now. The big one was actually a pass against ISU, but that's good enough for me. October was a good month for Jake and we want more.

--40,000 plus Jayhawk fans wearing blue at Arrowhead (adjusted down from 50k for our "home" game last year)
1/3 We'll see

2/3 Still a lot of football to play before we get there. Got to focus on Saturday.

--60,000 plus Jayhawk fans wearing blue at Arrowhead one week later
1/3 The fans will be there

2/3 KSU is step one

--14 wins
1/3 Looks like we'll come up one short, but I can certainly live with 13-1

2/3 I think we top out at 11 now, but I think we just need to focus on win #6 and getting to the game (KSU) that gets us to the game (NU) that gets us to the game (MU) that gives us a shot to play for a championship.

Wednesday Recycle: Bowen and Young

IT'S ALL ABOUT CLINT
A lot of talk about Clint Bowen this week. I've been debating this one all year with the tailgate crew. A vote against Clint Bowen is a vote against Bill Young. This outfit runs the same this year as it did every previous year. As Young himself notes in a Wednesday KC Star article, we had a weak pass defense in 2007 -- we just didn't play against strong passing teams. When Nebraska scored all over the place, that was a warning sign and we saw it on full display against Mizzou. Nothing new has occured this season.

BILL YOUNG ON TALENT
It was interesting to note that Young would now acknowledge the talent gap for KU vs Texas and OU (even Tech) in that KC Star article. Our best "D" surfaced in 2005 with transfers Charlton Keith and Jermail Ashley at DE. I'm not advocating a purely JUCO infusion of DE talent but I'm wondering if we need to uncover a new area to mine defensive ends rather than taking the players that UT, OU, OSU, A&M and Tech pass on. It's clear that you have to have big-time athletes at DE to play the spread. How are the Russian and Chinese high school football programs coming along?

STILL
Texas Tech and OU have great O-lines. It will be interesting to see how the front four play against mid-level Big 12 teams over the next two weeks. As I mentioned before, I really liked the fire the d-line showed after getting left on the field for virtually four straight series to start the third quarter. Jamal Greene in particular looked like a man who had had enough. Maybe it's time to stop thinking about technique and just start thinking about destroying the guy across the line.

THIS YEAR'S KANSAS
The last true "TYK" team fell when OSU couldn't get it done against Texas. I guess you could throw Tech in the mix, but too many people were calling for them to be legit in the offseason. Still, a great place to be for Red Raiders fans

Full list of perfect teams and next opponent:
Penn State 9-0 at Iowa
Texas 8-0 at Texas Tech
Texas Tech 8-0 vs Texas
Alabama 8-0 at Arkansas St
Ball State 8-0 vs N. Illinois
Utah 8-0 at New Mexico
Boise State 7-0 at New Mexico St

Off the List:
OSU lost to Texas 24-28

KU FOOTBALL PULLS HALLOWEEN PRANK: Fans/Vegas Are Not Amused

In an apparent Halloween stunt, the University of Kansas Football team decided to play a little "trick" on their fans and provided them with an unwelcomed "treat" as they played the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lawrence last Saturday. The then 23rd ranked Jayhawks got into the Halloween spirit as they all appeared in costume for the 11:00 a.m. game. Each Jayhawk on the 2008 squad appeared dressed as their favorite KU player from the late 90's. Even head man Mark Mangino got into the action as he walked the sideline dressed as his predecessor, Terry Allen.

The stunt was suppose to be a joke as the team intended to just wear the red throwback jerseys, but apparently many on the KU roster took the prank very seriously and "stayed in character" by brutally displaying the lackluster effort of KU teams from the Terry Allen era. Mangino said, "In hindsight, maybe we shouldn't have done that. We were just trying to be funny and get into the Halloween Spirit, but I guess it backfired on us".

The students were visibly irritated. One soft spoken student (who ironically opposes the controversial and vulgar kickoff chant of old) said, "We even changed our (expletive) chant, for this (expletive) football game, and we didn't even get a (expletive) chance to say it, because we were getting our (expletive) butts kicked all game long!"

Similarly, it looks as if Vegas took a serious hit and is extremely upset with the KU shenanigans. The line which closed with KU favored by 1.5, was destroyed as the Red Raiders outscored the Hawks by 42. Bellaggio owner Terry Benedict said initial lost estimates are in the tens of millions, and that the casino "hasn't lost this much since that bastard Danny Ocean swindled me!"

In related news, defensive coordinator Clint Bowen made no promises for a victory next week against in-state rival Kansas State acknowledging that it will be difficult to stay focused on football and not Halloween especially since each of the Wildcat players will be dressed as different variations of Barney, the "Tinkie Winkie" Teletubbie, and former McDonalds character Grimace. He did however go on and promise that they would "try really hard" to win next week.

Around the Big 12: Week #9

1 (A+ 99%) - Texas (8-0)
A great escape, but I think they have to go to Lubbock now. It just never ends for the Horns, defend the top spot every week.
(HD rank 4-4-3-3-3-3-1-1-1)

2 (A 96%) - Texas Tech (8-0)
Unfortunately, it appears the Red Raiders still haven't played anyone, but they do get UT at home.
(HD rank 5-5-4-4-4-4-4-4-2)

3 (A 95%) - Oklahoma (7-1)
Not a bad little road trip to Manhattan (58-35), but Tech gets the bump due to the perfect record and what appears to be a slightly more destructive offense.
(HD rank 1-1-1-1-1-1-3-3-3)

4 (A 95%) - Oklahoma State (7-1)
Well, the Cowboys gave them a good scare, but came up just short again. A visit from ISU should have everyone feeling better.
(HD rank 6-6-6-7-6-6-2-2-4)

5 (A- 90%) - Missouri (6-2)
Looks like the Tigers got their mojo back -- 58-0 over CU. More good times ahead as they travel to Waco
(HD rank 2-2-2-2-2-2-5-5-5)

6 (B- 80%) - Nebraska (5-3)
It wouldn't seem so in the past, but the 32-20 home win over Baylor was a quality win for the Huskers. They have OU in Norman this week, but it gets much easier after that. They look to be on schedule for the 8-4 season they had projected.
(HD rank 8-7-7-8-8-8-9-7-6)

7 (C- 72%) - Kansas (5-3)
At some point, you figure pride has to kick in, but this is a hard outfit to read. They've definitely lost their mojo, but at least we saw some anger from the d-line after TR put up his third straight INT. Any kind of emotion is notable at this point for the slumbering Jayhawks.
(HD rank 3-3-5-6-5-5-6-6-7)

8 (D 66%) - Colorado (4-4)
Welcome to the Big 12 Arena league. It's a tough point in history to not have an awesome offense. Travelling to A&M this week.
(HD rank 7-8-8-5-7-7-10-8-8)

9 (D 65%) - Kansas State (4-4)
It was close and then it wasn't. The Sunflower Showdown is now on deck and the game now has a different sort of meaning.
(HD rank 9-9-9-10-10-11-7-9-9)

10 (D 64%) Baylor (3-5)
The Bears are better, but they still only have three wins and here's your finish -- MU, @UT, aTm & @Tech.
(HD rank 11-11-10-9-9-10-8-10-10)

11 (D 63%) Texas A&M (3-5)
You have to start somewhere and sometimes it happens to be a road win at Iowa State. They'll host CU this week.
(HD rank 12-12-12-12-12-12-12-11-11)

12 (F 58%) Iowa State (2-6)
In the corporate world, people usually say "it is what it is" in situations like this. Take cover as Clones are heading to Stillwater.
(HD rank 10-10-11-11-11-9-11-12-12)

Shark Sandwich: Texas Tech 63, Kansas 21

TAKE A BITE
I give the KU performance the same two-word review that Spinal Tap received for their Shark Sandwich LP in 1980.

PLUS
Well, I guess that the Red Raiders didn't hit 80 as I expected after watching the first two Tech series.

MINUS
I don't see a long-term, medium term or short term solution for our pass D problems that really have pretty much been around for most of the decade. There appears to be no way to scheme your way toward success against the polished spread teams. It looks like you just have to have the better athletes and they better be dialed into their assignments.

WORLD VIEW
I guess we start from the ground up with what looks to be a real battle with KSU next week.

Rock Chalk Roundtable 1.4 -- Tech Preview

Hawk Digest Tech Preseason Preview

The Scene
KU has never beaten Texas Tech in Lawrence. You'll never get any respect with that figure being thrown around. The road team has won four of the six games in this series since the programs joined the Big 12.

The Key
The Jayhawk defense has to get past the concept that it is okay to allow Tech to score. This is a good offense, but it's not OU or Texas or even Mizzou for that matter. If you're comfortable sitting behind Tech in the Big 12 power structure, then you're not one of the Fighting Mangino's. It's time to get your headgear on and defend your goalline (see Darrell Stuckey).

The Motivation
10-2 is still out there. In fact, with a win tomorrow, it becomes quite visible.

The Bullets

  • The Jayhawks last beat a top 10 team at Memorial in 1984 (OU)
  • It's homecoming. KU is 41-48-5 all-time in homecoming games, but have won four of their last five
  • KU's home win streak is at 13 games including six straight Big 12 home games
  • Mark Mangino is 42-38 and fourth on the all-time wins list. Next up is Jack Mitchell at 44-42-5.
  • KU has averaged 50,516 fans per game. Last year's record-breaking attendance average was 46,784.
  • With 6,012 career passing yards, Todd Reesing is within striking distance of Frank Seurer's record of 6,410
  • He'll likely break the season passing yard record tomorrow as well held by Bill Whittemore with 2,385. The Reesing has 2,322
  • Dezmon Briscoe has 15 career TD receptions. The record is 17 shared by Bruce Adams and Willie Vaughn

"I think that you have to put things on the field that our players do best and execute those. We need to be good in coverages, but we also need to do a good job of putting pressure on the quarterback. We cannot allow him to sit back there because he will find somebody open. We have to be good at coverage, but we also need to find ways to have him get rid of the football sooner."

--Mark Mangino, stopping Tech

Rip His Head Off: Celebrity Alternatives

Since the existing list of alternatives for the "Rip His Head Off" Jayhawk football kickoff chant didn't offer much pop, I thought I'd look to the world of politics and fame to see if they could help out with this critical issue. The suggestions they gave are as follows and I promise it's all true:

Rip His Beautiful Head Off
Bono, U2

The fundamental change I want to make is to remove the opponent kick returner's head; however, let's make sure he has health coverage to get that thing sowed back on ... I think we can all agree on that.
Barack Obama

Rip his (expletive) head off, let me repeat ... rip his (expletive) head off
Joe Biden

Rip his mavericky head offcredit: sskennel / flikr CC
Sarah Palin

Sex, head ripping off and politics ... why talk about it?
Donald Draper

Tackle that guy!
Murray Hewitt

I'd like to rip his head off. Yes, I think I'd quite enjoy that.
Pete Campbell

Rip His Wonderful Head Off
Jimmy Stewart

I'd like to re-distribute the head ripping off to all of the teams in college football. It's not fair that KU is doing all of the head ripping off we need a system that allows everyone the opportunity rip someone's head off.
Barack Obama

Listen friends, I want to bring you head ripping off with honor, not defeat (big smile).
John McCain
